We like winning because winning feels good. Just consider the natural physical energy we feel when we win and the common pleasure of games, trophies, prizes. From growing child to aging adults, human beings clearly have the capacity to receive intense pleasure from winning. Our brains release dopamine when we win and can provide intense feelings of thereby experience pleasure from winning. So it seems safe to say that the pervasive pleasure of winning is deeply ingrained in us. The tragic irony of problem gambling is that this natural thrill of winning becomes a source of inevitable loss, when the ongoing pursuit of the same high drives the pursuit to gamble.
